Did anyone recalibrate ADAS sensors after a body repair and was it actually necessary?
Had some panel work done recently and the shop mentioned something about sensor recalibration afterward. I had no idea this was even a thing. Is it something that actually matters or just an upsell shops push on customers?

I had the same question after a rear bumper replacement last year. The shop told me the parking sensors needed recalibration and I honestly thought they were just adding to the bill. Turned out it was a legitimate concern. After the repair the parking sensor was giving inconsistent readings so I looked into what ADAS calibration actually involves and you can view it here if you want a breakdown of what the process typically covers. From what I understood any repair involving bumpers panels or windshields can shift the alignment of sensors cameras and radar components even slightly and that small shift is enough to throw off systems like blind spot monitoring or lane keep assist. The recalibration brings everything back to factory specifications which matters more than it sounds since these systems are designed with very tight tolerances. I was a bit surprised by how involved the process was because it is not just a software reset but an actual positioning and measurement procedure. Whether it is worth doing depends on how much you rely on those driver assistance features but if your vehicle has them and they were anywhere near the repaired area I would not skip it.
